Own it vs rent an AI stack
Renting tools can be fine for commodity work. Building the operating system of your business on rented ground is a different bet.
Renting tools can be fine for commodity work. Building the operating system of your business on rented ground is a different bet.
There is a useful difference between renting a tool and renting the spine of your operation.
SaaS and hosted products are fine for commodity work. Email, calendar, a generic assistant for drafts. Switching cost is low and the differentiation is not yours anyway.
The problem starts when the thing that quotes jobs, routes orders, owns customer data, or runs your product loop lives only inside someone else's platform. Then every month you pay rent on your own process. Every roadmap decision waits on their roadmap. Leaving means rebuilding from screenshots and exports that never quite match production.
For core systems: we build it, you own it. The system runs on infrastructure you control, with your data and your keys. You can run it without us. You are not locked into a rented agent platform forever.
That does not mean never subscribe to anything. It means be honest about what is commodity and what is leverage. Leverage should compound on ground you control.
An APD/M deployment is not a seat license for a friendly robot. It is an operating system for product work: agents, context, jobs, gates. If that system only exists as a black-box chat product, you have rented coordination. If it exists as a deployment you control - config, data, gates, and infrastructure you hold - you have capacity.
We use strong models and solid commodity services. We do not pretend the model vendor is the whole architecture. The architecture is yours: who may deploy, what is logged, what context is shared, which tools agents may never touch.
1. Can I export everything that matters?
2. If this vendor disappeared tomorrow, would my operation still run?
Those answers tell you whether you are buying software or renting a dependency. If you are building the operating system of the business, own the ground it stands on.
